Video Editing Practice Blog Reflection

I officially earned a new bragging right! In class today I learned how to edit together a variety of clips of Premier Pro. Let me tell you, if I didn't have step by step videos I would have been lost as a goose. Premier Pro has a lot of features and it can take a while to learn the short cuts of the app as well as the navigation.

The Experience

In all honesty, it took me a hot minute to put my clips into 'bins' and choose my format style that would work best for me to easily piece my clips together.

I decided to pair my B-Roll clips into one bin and my 4 interviews into another because it would help me get a clearer experience. Moreover, I think putting my clips in a format with a little preview helped me visualize the clips rather then having to remember which file was which.

What I learned

As shown above I didn't do much color coordinating because I was able to still see a little preview of the clip while have a good idea of the sound. However, as I worked I did have trouble picking my clips. I tend to work better when I film my own clips and I know where I would piece them, yet with this assignment there was so many clips that it was a bit overwhelming. I work better with less clips and overlayed sound because I know what I'm working with. Although, having a lot of clips gave me the freedom to pick and choose, it still made me unsure if I took the right approach.

As I continued to work on this project I really thought about how much editing can effect the audiences perception toward the video being presented. For example, if I only included clips from Zach Fortner's interview those who are watching would think the video is an advertisement. Yet by including several teens getting some pineapple whip it creates a friendly atmosphere and the video now seems like just another thing you could do while going to the fair.

My Takeaways

This assignment gave me a clear idea that editing takes a lot of patience. Although this was my first project and I was just getting used to the software, I still need to take my time and watch/listen to the clips thoroughly. In addition, my choices as the editor effects the audiences perception. Doing this assignment, allowed me to be more familiar with premier pro and different editing techniques.
